Official Recognition of Biomedical Positions in Cambodia and New Student Intake at UHS

Published

Biomedical engineering in Cambodia has reached an important milestone. Following the recent signing of a Sub-Decree by the Prime Minister, biomedical positions have been officially recognized within the national public health system. This step represents a major institutional and professional breakthrough and marks a new phase in the development of the biomedical engineering profession in the country.

The Sub-Decree formally establishes two clearly defined professional roles:

  • Biomedical Equipment Technical Officer, requiring an Associate degree,
  • Biomedical Equipment Engineer, requiring a Bachelor’s degree.

The inclusion of these positions in the national public health structure underscores the essential role of biomedical professionals in ensuring the safe and reliable operation of medical equipment, protecting patients and healthcare staff, and supporting the long-term sustainability of the healthcare system.

The recognition of a bachelor-level biomedical engineering position is particularly significant. It sends a clear signal of the need to systematically develop higher education in biomedical engineering and enables a direct link between the education system and the staffing needs of the public sector, which can now employ suitably qualified graduates in these newly established roles.

For international partners involved in the development of biomedical engineering in Cambodia, this achievement carries special importance. Formal recognition of biomedical positions has been a long-term strategic priority, actively pursued since 2019. Its realization represents a highly positive breakthrough that strengthens the impact, credibility, and visibility of the discipline, while also providing a solid foundation for continued collaboration and the further development of related projects, including current and future initiatives originating from the Czech Republic.

In this positive context, it is also a pleasure to note the successful recruitment of a new cohort of students. The upcoming intake, with 29 registered students, confirms the growing attractiveness of biomedical education at the University of Health Sciences (UHS) and Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and reflects increasing student confidence in clear, meaningful career pathways in the field of healthcare technologies.

Together, these developments represent a crucial step toward building sustainable capacity in biomedical engineering in Cambodia and lay strong foundations for its continued professional and institutional growth.

πŸ‘‰ More information and the official announcement of the recognized positions were also shared on Facebook.

Promotion of the Biomedical Engineering in Cambodia and the Czech Republic

Published

On 12 November 2025, the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of CTU, together with the University of Health Sciences (UHS) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC), presented itself at the Study in Europe Fair education festival in Phnom Penh. The aim of their participation was to introduce Cambodian secondary schools and high-school students to the field of biomedical engineering and the possibilities of studying it in both the Czech Republic and Cambodia.

Great interest from visitors was sparked by a hands-on demonstration of electrocardiography, during which participants could have their own ECG measured under the guidance of four Cambodian biomedical engineering students from UHS and ITC. The students explained to visitors how the device works as well as the importance of biomedical engineering for modern healthcare. The event was supported by the Czech Development Agency, which has long supported the development of biomedical engineering in Cambodia.

The following day, an open day was held at the University of Health Sciences, during which local students presented opportunities for studying biomedical engineering in Cambodia. The programme also included practical demonstrations of the work of biomedical engineers using medical devices supplied to UHS along with a newly built laboratory as part of development cooperation with the Czech Republic.

πŸŽ‰ Opening of a New Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at UHS

Published

On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Phnom Penh celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new Biomedical Engineering LaboratoryΒ β€” a place where students can gain hands-on experience with medical devices, learn how they work, and understand how to maintain them safely and effectively.

The opening ceremony was honored by the presence of H.E. Martin VΓ‘vra, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cambodia πŸ‡¨πŸ‡Ώ, the State Secretary of the Cambodian Ministry of Health, the Rector of UHS, and many other distinguished guests.

πŸ‘©β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸ”§ Among the visitors were also representatives of Cambodian hospitals and private companies specializing in medical technology, many of whom expressed their interest in future graduates of the Biomedical Engineering program.

This new laboratory was fully renovated within a long-term project supported by the Czech Development Agency (CzDA) πŸ‡¨πŸ‡ΏπŸ€πŸ‡°πŸ‡. The project aims to introduce biomedical engineering into Cambodia’s healthcare system β€” starting from building works and medical-grade electrical installations to the delivery of medical devices and laboratory exercises for student training.

πŸ’¬ Prof. Karel RoubΓk from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), highlighted the importance of this milestone:

β€œThe opening of this laboratory represents a successful result of FBME’s long-term efforts to introduce biomedical engineering in countries where this profession does not yet exist. Thanks to the collaboration with UHS and the Cambodian Ministry of Health, there are now plans to establish the new profession of Biomedical Engineer and include it in Cambodia’s healthcare system. This laboratory is another step toward making that vision a reality.”

Training of Future Biomedical Engineers

Published

Within the framework of the project aimed at education and promotion of biomedical engineering in Cambodia, the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering (FBME) of CTU continues professional training of future Cambodian biomedical engineers in 2024.

In the spring, laboratory exercises focused on the principles of medical instrumentation were conducted with 2nd and 3rd year students and their teachers. The classes were held in the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, which was created thanks to the support of the Czech Development Agency project running from 2019-2021 and implemented by FBME experts.

Another practical training took place at the campus of the University of Health Sciences, where, within the framework of this project and again with the financial support of the Czech Development Agency, the laboratory is currently undergoing renovation, where practical training in medical instrumentation is planned in the future.

The practical training focused specifically on the use and maintenance of diagnostic medical equipment such as electrocardiographs, pulse oximeters and blood pressure monitors.

In June, a two-week intensive training of Cambodian students and their teachers took place in the Czech Republic. The training took place in the laboratories of the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering of the Czech Technical University, the Centre for Medical Simulations at the 1st Medical Faculty of Charles University, the Proton Centre, Motol University Hospital and the KrΓ‘lovskΓ© Vinohrady University Hospital. The students and lecturers also attended the three-day international professional conference YBERC 2024 for students and young scientists, where they learned more about new developments in the field of biomedical engineering.
