On Tuesday, November 19, 2024, the University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Phnom Penh celebrated the grand opening of a brand-new Biomedical Engineering Laboratory — a place where students can gain hands-on experience with medical devices, learn how they work, and understand how to maintain them safely and effectively.
The opening ceremony was honored by the presence of H.E. Martin Vávra, Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Cambodia 🇨🇿, the State Secretary of the Cambodian Ministry of Health, the Rector of UHS, and many other distinguished guests.
👩⚕️👨🔧 Among the visitors were also representatives of Cambodian hospitals and private companies specializing in medical technology, many of whom expressed their interest in future graduates of the Biomedical Engineering program.
This new laboratory was fully renovated within a long-term project supported by the Czech Development Agency (CzDA) 🇨🇿🤝🇰🇭. The project aims to introduce biomedical engineering into Cambodia’s healthcare system — starting from building works and medical-grade electrical installations to the delivery of medical devices and laboratory exercises for student training.
💬 Prof. Karel Roubík from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering, Czech Technical University in Prague (CTU), highlighted the importance of this milestone:
“The opening of this laboratory represents a successful result of FBME’s long-term efforts to introduce biomedical engineering in countries where this profession does not yet exist. Thanks to the collaboration with UHS and the Cambodian Ministry of Health, there are now plans to establish the new profession of Biomedical Engineer and include it in Cambodia’s healthcare system. This laboratory is another step toward making that vision a reality.”
