UHS & ITC
University of Health Sciences (UHS) and the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) have opened a new and unique Associate Degree in Medical Bio-Engineering degree programme. Over the course of 3 years, students will learn theoretical and practical knowledge in the fields of biology, physics, electrical engineering and medicine. The graduates, so-called Biomedical Technicians (BMETs), will find career opportunities in hospitals as well as in the private sector. In the hospital, they will be responsible for the maintenance and management of medical devices; in the private sector, they will work as service technicians for specific devices or in the development of new devices or unique methods of therapy or diagnosis.
The uniqueness of this profession lies in its multidisciplinarity and the necessary link between doctors and devices. Medical devices today are so complex that doctors cannot fully understand them technically. Doctors, nurses and BMETs form a team to provide the highest quality care. Moreover, BMETs ensure that medical devices are safe for patients and doctors. As a result, they increase efficiency and decrease financial costs for hospitals, as well as improve the standard of care.
In cooperation with the Czech Republic, a special laboratory for teaching biomedical engineering was opened in 2022, which focuses mainly on teaching Fluid Mechanics and Plumbing in Healthcare. At the same time, there is ongoing and continuous training of teachers and teaching with students.
This laboratory has equipment at international level and in many respects exceeds it. The basic building blocks of the laboratory are a compressor that produces medical quality air, a dryer, an air chamber and compressed air distribution pipes. The laboratory also contains the following instruments:
– 3D Printer
– Pressure Meters
– Flow Meters (Rotameters, Hall sensor based flow meter, Mass flow meter, Pitot tube)
– Kit for Bernoulli equation demonstration
– Pneumatic and Hydraulic kit PNEHYKUR (contains the main computer called Meluzína, connectors and adapters, pressure sensors, electromagnetic solenoids, and pneumatic components)
– Models of respiratory system
– Humidifiers and Nebulizers
– Vacuum pump and suction unit
– Laboratory Voltage Source
– Air dryers
– Kit for pneumatic logic circuits simulation
– Multimeter
– Pneumatic tools for assembling apparatuses (gas blending, mechanical ventilator)
– Valves of different types used medicine (PEEP valve, Pressure reducing valve, Pressure relief valve)
– Water pumps
– Kit for Torricelli’s law demonstration
There are plans to open another special laboratory in 2024, which will now focus on practical teaching of medical instrumentation and its maintenance. First part of the medical devices is already on the way to Cambodia.
